According to a recent survey, Spain remains the most popular destination for people who decide to jet away for some Easter fun in the sun. Whilst news of Spain’s popularity is hardly going to be front page news, it is interesting to see that it is not just during the summer that people flock to it’s shores from the UK.
But why? What does it have that we do not have over here at Easter time?
Cool Cities
Cool in both senses of the word. Spain’s major cities at this time of the take some beating. Easter falls at the beginning of April this year and in Barcelona this means balmy temperatures of 16 degree Celsius. This is perfect weather for sitting outside with a glass of beer or wine in your hand people watching. Or if you are a bit more active, you could take a stroll along Las Ramblas which will be than less busy than it is during August but still full of activity – just significantly less humid and stressful than in high season!
Sightseeing Tours
Due to cheap Spain holidays in the main being based around the coastal towns and resorts, much of the country’s history and cultural towns often gets overlooked. But a holiday to Spain in Easter will not, in the majority of cases, mean wall to wall sunshine, so what better time to get out and about and explore? Ruta de los Pueblos Blancos in southern Spain is one of the most beautiful scenic routes in the whole country and following it will let you explore many quaint, traditional Spanish towns and really get a feel for life in the Spanish countryside. If in the north, drive between the towns of Santander and Ovideo for a similar experience. Hire a car and take it all in!
Canary Sunshine
Whilst mainland Spain might not quite have the temperatures that will guarantee you come home with a tan, there is one place that can – the Canary Islands. Although Tenerife, Lanzarote, Gran Canaria and the remaining four islands are located just off the coast of West Africa, they are officially part of Spain and one of the only places in the world where sunshine is guaranteed 12 months a year.
Easy Access
One of Spain’s long standing benefits is its close proximity to the UK and getting there is often easier than it is to get to other parts of our own country! London, Manchester, Birmingham, Scotland – there are flights from all of these airports and more to just as many destinations in Spain. Plus, with the advancements of no-frills airlines, not only is it easy to get there, it is also very cheap too.
