The Fun of Fishing in Lanzarote

lanzarote fishing

There are plenty of opportunities for shore fishing in Lanzarote as there are for deep sea fishing. If throwing a line and waiting for your catch to bite is you idea of fun, then here are a few facts and tips for you.

The best places to fish
Playa Blanca is popular by the lighthouse, as is from the breakwater at Playa Dorada. Costa Teguise has several good places i.e. from the rocks at Playa Bastian and the breakwaters at Playa Las Cucharas and Playa del Jabillo

The best bait
Success comes with using bread flakes, raw chicken, live bait, squid, crab, prawn and bacon!

The catch
When you get your licence you will also receive charts which will help you to identify local fish. Popular catches include Cheme, Dorado, Vieja and Sardines. There are plenty of Barracuda in the waters too so mind your fingers when you are unhooking them!

Fishing License
You will need a Licencia de Pesca Maritima de Recrep to make your fishing legal and avoid fines. You can download an application and you need to complete it and take it with your passport to the Cabildo de Lanzarote. It costs around 15 Euros for a three year licence.

There are three classes of licence which you can apply for. Of course you can apply for all or a combination of them.
• 1a clase: Pesca Maritima Recreative de Altura – fishing from the shore
• 2a clase: Pesca Recreativa Submarina a Plumbion Libre – spear fishing. You need a medical certificate for this class to prove you are medically fit to free dive. Children under 16 need parental consent too
• 3a clase: Pesca Recreativa de Superficie – fishing from a boat
N B Lanzarote is generally fairly relaxed about shore fishing as long as you choose somewhere safe to fish away from swimmers and marinas.

Stay safe
Remember to take care when choosing your fishing spot. In the past fishermen have been swept off or slipped off rocks into the sea.

Deep Sea Fishing
If you fancy a day’s serious fishing out on the ocean for the possibility of bigger catches, you can charter a fisihng boat from around 85 Euros. The waters around Lanzarote promise catches of Blue Marlin, Skipjack tuna as well as mackerel and herring. Bonito and Red Snapper have also been caught in this area too.

There are certainly plenty of opportunities to indulge in your love of fishing on your cheap holiday to Lanzarote. As the climate in the Canary Islands is good all year round, fishing isn’t seasonal though what you catch may be.
